Codman Neurovascular Launches Microcoil Systems and Distal Access Guiding Catheter

July 23, 2012—Codman Neurovascular, Inc., a unit of Codman & Shurtleff, Inc. (Raynham, MA), announced the launch of the DeltaMaxx microcoil system and Orbit Galaxy G2 microcoils. The Orbit Galaxy coils can now be used with the Enpower detachment system. Both new microcoil systems are available in the United States and Europe.

Codman Neurovascular also introduced the Envoy DA distal access guiding catheter, which facilitates navigation through tortuous portions of the carotid siphon and provides stability for complex neurointerventional procedures. The announcement was made at the 9th annual meeting of the Society of NeuroInterventional Surgery in San Diego. 


Codman & Shurtleff is part of DePuy Synthes Companies of Johnson & Johnson (New Brunswick, NJ). The Enpower system was developed by Micrus Endovascular Corporation (San Jose, CA), which was acquired by Johnson & Johnson in 2010 and became part of Codman Neurovascular.


According to the company's press release, the DeltaMaxx microcoil system features Codman's DeltaWind technology, a triangular-wind shape with natural deflection points that enables the coil to change direction more easily than traditional circular-wind coils. The coil comes in lengths of up to 60 cm. It is compatible with microcatheters that have 0.0165- to 0.019-inch inner lumen diameters, such as the company's Prowler catheters, which can also accommodate smaller finishing coils.



“The DeltaMaxx system offers a unique combination of long, 18 system coils with DeltaWind technology that can be seamlessly delivered through a 14 system microcatheter,” commented Ansaar T. Rai, MD, Associate Professor of Neuroradiology and Vice Chairman of Radiology at West Virginia University Hospitals. “This coil has enabled me to efficiently achieve high packing densities and aneurysm occlusion with the same catheter I use to deliver smaller coils.”



Codman Neurovascular's Orbit Galaxy G2 microcoils are complex-shaped, soft, and highly conformable coils with random break points. The system has been shown to deliver high packing densities and result in low retreatment rates. The coils are deployed with the Enpower detachment system, a push-button thermomechanical detachment that streamlines the coiling procedure.

Finally, the Envoy DA distal access guiding catheter features a braid design, soft distal tip, hydrophilic coating, and larger inner lumen, stated the company.
