Cook Medical Introduces the Retracta Embolization Coil
April 18, 2013—Cook Medical (Bloomington, IN) announced the launch of the Retracta detachable embolization coil, which is a fully retractable, .035-inch embolization coil intended for peripheral arterial and venous embolization.
According to the company's press release, the Retracta coil is designed to provide controlled, precise delivery of embolization coils. Visibility of the detachment zone allows the interventionist to easily identify when the Retracta is ready to be detached. If the physician is not satisfied with the positioning of the coil in the vessel, the coil can be fully retracted into the catheter and repositioned before detachment.
Cook Medical advised that Retracta coils use platinum technology to allow soft packing of the coil. Placement accuracy can be confirmed under fluoroscopy by seeing the change in radiopacity at the detachment zone. If desired, the interventionist can inject a contrast medium to confirm that the coil is correctly placed.
The Retracta device is based on the construction of Cook Medical's Nester coils. Like the Nester coil, the Retracta can be used right out of the package, noted the company.
